Woe to Al-Mutaffifin [those who give less in measure and weight (decrease the rights of others)]

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

“Woe to Al-Mutaffifin [those who give less in measure and weight (decrease the rights of others)],

Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men (others), demand full measure,

And when they have to give by measure or weight to men (others), give less than due.”

(Soorah al-Mutaffifin)

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen رحمه الله:

“For example, the husband wants from his wife that she gives his rights fully and that she doesn’t fall short in any of those rights. However, when it comes to him in fulfilling her rights, he falls short/lax and does not give her (from her rights) which belong to her. And how many women complain about this type from the husbands and Allaah’s refuge is sought, where many want their rights to be given fully however he doesn’t give her rights fully, and maybe he falls short in many of her rights from spending upon her, and in living with her in a good way and other than that (from her rights). Indeed, oppression of the people is more severe than the oppression of a person of himself in regards to(falling short in) the right of Allaah. That is because, oppression of the person of himself in regards to the right of Allaah falls under the Will of Allaah if it is less than Shirk. If Allaah wills He will forgive him, and if He wills He will punish him. But when it comes to the rights of the humans, they do not enter under this Will (of Allaah), it is a must (that those rights)be paid back.
And this is why the prophet عليه الصلاة والسلام said:

“Do you know who is bankrupt?”

They said: “The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property”.

He said, “The real bankrupt of my Ummah would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with Salah, Saum (fasting)and Sadaqah (charity), (but he will find himself bankrupt on that day as he will have exhausted the good deeds) because he reviled others, brought calumny against others, unlawfully devoured the wealth of others, shed the blood of others and beat others; so his good deeds would be credited to the account of those (who suffered at his hand). If his good deeds fall short to clear the account, their sins would be entered in his account and he would be thrown in the (Hell) Fire”.

(Saheeh Muslim)

So my advice to those (husbands) who fall short in the rights of their wives that they should fear Allaah the Mighty and Majestic, for indeed the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم advised with that in the greatest gathering that was witnessed in the Islaamic world in the lifetime of the Messenger عليه الصلاة والسلام on the Day of ‘Arfah, in the farewell Hajj, he said:

“Fear Allaah concerning women (your wives) for you have taken them on the trust/security of Allaah and have made their bodies lawful to you by the words of Allaah.”

(Saheeh Muslim)
